So I’m being encouraged by my employer to take my last week of vacation at the end of September. I want to travel. What are some really cheap large cities in the U.S. to stay in
Right now I’m leaning towards Baltimore. It’s close enough to drive and hotels don’t look too bad.

Birmingham is pretty lame so it should be cheap.

You can camp in my backyard. You just have to pick up after my dog, with complimentary breakfasts!

Drive around, camp in state parks. Significantly more enjoyable than cheap hotels.

I said stay in , not travel to.

You could take a nice relaxing trip to the Vineyard. I hear it’s nice and peaceful out there once all the tourists clear out

I live in St. Louis and can vouch that it’s pretty cheap.
But other cities are much nicer and they also have holiday inns.

I stayed a couple nights in Philly and thought it was pretty reasonable. Parking was absurd, but my girlfriend inisisted on leaving the car right downtown even though we didn’t use the damn thing.

Denver should be reasonable then; it’s before ski season but the high country will be very nice (aspens, cool weather, sun). Indianapolis is dirt-cheap, and has a lot of great sites. Chicago in late summer/early fall is usually fairly affordable (I’ve been for the marathon a few times, and it was a good deal). New Orleans will be a bit warm/humid still, but the prices will be low and it’s always a nice evening to walk for music, food, and drink. You might just beat the price hikes for West Palm in FL (and surrounding Miami, Lauderdale, etc.). Maybe Atlanta. DC might be off of the summer family trip season and as reasonable as it ever gets. Damn, now I want to go on a trip...

DC, I spent 10 days out there and including rental car, hostel stay, and flights it was $600 or so, you could do it for about 100 less if you tried a bit. The Smithsonians alone are worth it, and there’s lots of good food, can’t go wrong.

Do you like beer?

New Orleans is fairly cheap right now. I stayed at the Aloft downtown for $71 a night. It is also hurricane season, so...
DC can be ok as far as price.

What kind of question is that?

It should be rhetorical. I’m from Grand Rapids, MI. We’re at something like 50 breweries in the immediate area. It’s a wonderful town to visit and drink beer in.
